It's coming to an end...

Well... here it is, my last week at Punch (sigh!) :(!

I've had such a great experience here gaining a real understanding of what organising a festival requires.
I have also managed to develop my personal skills, especially my confidence when meeting new people.

I feel privalidged to have been given this experience at Punch and work so closely with such hardworking people. They give so much to new, young artists, giving them guidance and exciting opportunities.

Being at punch has given me a true insight into what it's like to work up to a music festival, develop my techniques in promotion and also the chance to meet some interesting and extremely talented people.

I know that all the hard work from Josie, Cynthia, Ammo and Nusra will pay off with the success of the Bass Festival.

Oh and sitting for hours filling envelopes with brochures and sticking addresses onto them really was worth it!

I'm looking forward to helping out at MC's for life! And if any opportunities arrive in the future at Punch i won't hesitate to accept! :)!

Thanks Punch!

P.s. Don't forget to visit www.bassfestival.co.uk to check out the events that are taking place during Bass Festival 2008!

I hope to see you there! :)

Bass Festivals in the past

If the information on the websites don't tempt you to come to the Bass festival this year then take a look at these press releases i just found from previous years!

  • I like this interpretation of BASS -

'BASS Festival Puts Birmingham at the heart of the music map

Thursday, 1st June 2006.

In summer people tend to assume that festivals take place over 3 days in fields full of tents, but Punch Records have but together BASS (Birmingham Arts and Street Sounds), an urban music festival that spans across Birmingham throughout the whole month of June.'

So, forget Glastonbury, V festival and Leeds this year- Bass is set to be Bigger and better than previous years and one not to be missed!

Bass Festival 2008

Bass Festival returns to the city... or should i say 5 cities this June! (Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Manchester!)

A month long celebration of British arts and street sounds.

Bass aims to put the midlands slap bang in the centre of the music map this summer!

Now even bigger, Bass will feature 40 events in over 35 venues across Birmingham and the East Midlands!!!

Breaking down barriers, this years theme is 'The elements'- celebrating the best that Hip-Hop has to offer including djing, mcing, graffiti and break dancing.

Punch with their partners- 2 funky, baby j and natasha foster have put together a seriously stong line up for the festival featuring leading artists in grime, dnb, hip hop, future jazz, reggae, broken beat, NY disco and gospel.

leading artisits include-

Lord Finesse, Ursula Rucker, Rodney P, Foreign Beggers, Black Thought, Omekongo, Napo Masheane, the Decypher Collective, Zena Edwards, Faith 47, Rich Medina, TY and many more!!!

Go to Bass Festival myspace page to find out more information-

www.myspace.com/bassmusicfestival

This is a festival like no other! Not only do you get to watch your favourite underground artists but you also get the chance to get involved!

  • Come and watch Hedz limited create a one off 50ft aerosol murial live, for free!
  • Watch the first ever Hip Hop film to be released staring the legends that are the godfathers of hip hop- fab 5 freddy, the Rock Steady crew, The Cold Crush Brothers and Grandmaster Flash.
  • Something for the ladies who love to DJ- Masterclasses with DJ Kayper- learn how she made it to and internationally renowned artist!
  • Come and bring your music to The Bull's Head to hear it played through one of the finest sound systems in Birmingham.
  • Are you a B-boy, B-girl or a street dancer, or would you like to learn? We have masterclasses going on with Strictly Dance Fever winner Joseph Hall aka Flytt, Flawless and Steady!
  • There are also several graffiti events, including mastclasses, where you can learn how to produce art like no other!

If you've never come across any of these artists before then maybe its about time you learnt about the history of Hip Hop and jump at the chance of learning more about underground music which wouldn't normally be available to you!

If i'm being honest, i hadn't heard of half of the artists who are coming to the Bass Festival... but that made me interested and determined to find out more.

After listening to the artists on their myspace pages and looking at their art and all who are coming to the Bass Festival- this is one not to be missed!!!

Keep checking for more updates or leave a comment if you need any more information! :)

Punch Records!

First of all I would like to ask who said that young people were at the height of technology? I’d never even heard of blogging… until now. So excuse me if it takes me a while to get into things!

So, here goes…
I’m Jessica! Originally from Stoke on Trent, I’m now in my second year at Chester University in Warrington but currently staying in Birmingham.
I’m quite an outgoing person with a passion for music and I love to sing! I enjoy meeting new people and I love university life! :)

At the moment though… I’m attempting to adapt to the life of full time work as I’m carrying out a five-week placement at Punch Records as part of my uni course.

More often that not when I tell people that I am studying music and marketing as a combined degree course they question how the two subjects fit together.
To be honest it wasn’t my intention to do marketing as I had no past experience or knowledge about the subject but I chose it and have enjoyed what my course has entailed so far!
I even began to question the link myself. However, being at Punch Records, which has taught me the importance of the knowledge of both marketing and music.

Punch Records, as you may or may not know, is the UK’s Premier music development agency, which specializes in a range of music events and touring productions. Well, that is what it says on their website- http://www.punchrecords.co.uk/. Check it out for more information. You know you want to!

As part of my placement I am to liaise with the punch team and support them during the build up to the big event Bass Festival 2008.

Check out this website to get involved http://www.bassfestival.co.uk/

That is really what this blog is all about!
It’s in short to introduce to you what Punch Records, as a company, set out to do and to help to promote the events so that you can read about them in more detail and develop more of an understanding AND to even help you get a better insight about the artists coming to the events!

Back to Punch- Using the production of Arts, music, photography, film, conferences (with very good topics) and theatre, Punch has developed many quality events for young people, which provides them with an exciting insight into education and culture, supporting them in their interests and helping them to acknowledge their roots.

By taking genres of music like Hip-hop and rap, they have developed events primarily to establish its roots and, by inviting international artists, celebrating the music itself.

Although only a small team of exciting people, Punch is a well-established raw company that relies on quality not quantity.
I think it’s extremely refreshing to see such an Arts company that believes in and is truly determined to give back to the community!

Following the success of Bass Festival 2006 and 2007, Bass Festival 2008, which kicks of on the 31st May, is hyped up to be even bigger and better. No arguments there!
Concentrating on just one city in 2006 the festival expanded to involve 3 cities in 2007 and is now set to grace 5 cities with its presence this year!

Bass Festival 2008 is designed to promote and celebrate the heritage of British Black and Urban music and arts scene, especially from the Midlands.
It will cover elements of-
Mcing, Djing, Graffiti, B-boying (including master classes), Beat boxing, urban fashion, entrepenurism and theatre, film and photography.

Learn to break dance/beat box, listen to music, celebrate the art of graffiti, meet new people, be within touching distance of huuuuge artists or just have a good drink and a dance!

Sound like your cup of tea? Or think that you know some one who would be interested? Then check out the websites above and keep browsing my blog as I will be updating it as much as I can! :)
I hope to see you there!
